Being a receptionist in a fast-paced environment is challenging work. It is work Lydia Salas, a life-long Holyoke resident, is comfortable and confident to do as prior to joining MiraVista Behavioral Health Center in May as weekend receptionist she was a receptionist for many years for the Holyoke Public Schools.
The position, she said, built on her “passion for working with the community and helping others” and provided her “with valuable skills and a strong sense of fulfillment in assisting individuals.”
“Transitioning to my new role at MiraVista was a natural progression for me to continue making a positive impact and utilizing my strengths in a different environment,” the bilingual receptionist said. “My dedication to serving others and my enjoyment of the various aspects of being a receptionist played a significant role in my decision to pursue opportunities here at MiraVista.”
She added, “Hospitals are often busy environments with a constant flow of patients, visitors, and staff members seeking assistance.”
“Managing a large volume of calls and inquiries can be overwhelming and requires quick thinking and multi-tasking skills,” Lydia said. “We handle some emergencies, and this requires the ability to remain calm under pressure.”
The work of a receptionist she feels is “adapting to unexpected changes and maintaining professionalism in challenging situations.”
She said her approach to interacting, like other staff, with people coming into the hospital is to make them feel safe and welcome.
“I greet everyone with a smile and with excellent communication and compassion for anyone who walks through MiraVista’s doors,” Lydia said. “We greet individuals with a warm and friendly demeanor, actively listen to their concerns, and address any questions or apprehensions they may have.”
She added that the goal is “focused on fostering trust, building rapport, and ensuring that each individual feels safe, respected, and welcomed throughout their experience with us.”
Lydia said she appreciates MiraVista for encouraging employees “to work together as a team, supporting one another and fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.”
How does this mother of “four wonderful adult children and three grandbabies” recharge outside of her weekend shifts?
“After a challenging day at work, I prioritize a mental and physical health recharge by spending quality time with my family,” Lydia said. “Engaging in activities, such as listening to music in my driveway, going shopping, and going out on dates with my husband helps me unwind and rejuvenate.”
She said that these “moments allow me to disconnect from work-related stressors, focus on personal connections, and enjoy moments of relaxation and joy.”
“By nurturing these relationships and engaging in activities that bring me happiness” Lydia said that she is able to feel “ready to face the next day with renewed energy and positivity. Something our patients and their families can look forward to receiving when they enter our doors.”
